The Department of Aviation actively embraces its role in social responsibility, maximizing operational efficiencies, ensuring economic viability, and minimizing the environmental impacts of airport operations. In 2006, it formed a committee representing a cross-section of the department, which still exists today with a renewed focus on airport sustainability. The terminal and office recycling programs in place are a result of the committee’s efforts to keep tons of paper, plastic and aluminum generated by airport facilities out of the landfill with the added benefit of reducing operational costs. Other materials such as batteries, toner cartridges, waste oil, tires and wooden pallets are also recycled.

Sound environmental principles drive many operations at the five department airport facilities. Recent efforts to green operations include installing more efficient garage and airfield lighting, swapping out the remaining turf for drought-tolerant xeriscaping, installation of stations that allow passengers to refill reusable water bottles, use of a non-toxic, multi-purpose cleaning product and paper goods that reduce the packaging, waste and shipping costs associated with traditional products. The team continues to generate and implement ideas that help the airport become more sustainable and to work with employees and tenants alike to spread the message.

The department has partnered with local businesses and charities to explore new ways to serve the community through donating items that have reached the end of their lifecycle or can be reused or repurposed. Community minded endeavors include neighborhood trash cleanups, partnering with efforts of other community based organizations and participating in educational outreach events. The department also has a Small, Women and Minority-Owned Businesses Participation /Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program. Many tenants who operate out of Department of Aviation facilities also serve the larger community by participating in environmental, charitable and educational outreach activities. The Department of Aviation serves as a significant driver to the economy in the southern Nevada region which host many large events and meetings. The airport facilities are not only a large employer, but a gateway to visiting domestic and international tourists and over two million local residents. The multi-year Terminal 3 project was a benefit to the community in the construction jobs it created during a major economic downturn. The Department of Aviation facilities provide the high level of customer service the public has come to expect, with improvements in design, delivery and maintenance from funding that is generated through operational revenues, passenger fees and grant funding. Sustainability is not just an abstract concept; it’s the way to do efficient airport business that benefits everyone.
